Detectives Find No New Evidence in Natalie Wood Case

Nearly two months after reopening the investigation into the drowning death of Natalie Wood, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department revealed yesterday that it has found no evidence suggesting that the West Side Story actress died as a result of foul play. Authorities were prompted to reexamine the case in part because of comments that appeared in a March 2000 Vanity Fairarticle on the murky circumstances of the incident, which occurred near Catalina Island in 1981. Wood and her husband, Robert Wagner, were taking an excursion on their yacht, Splendour, when she died.
The Sheriff's chief of detectives, William McSweeney, told the Los Angeles Times yesterday, "At this point, it is an accidental death. Nothing has been discovered to suggest changing that at this time."
McSweeney also revealed that detectives are still working to clear up some of the "smaller questions" that went unanswered in the original investigation. Although he suggested that cases like these are never really closed, the L.A. Times reports that McSweeney is "doubtful that more investigating will change the overall conclusion that her death was an accident."
For the 2000 article, Vanity Fair contributing editor Sam Kashner interviewed Dennis Davern, the former captain of Splendour, who was present the night of the actress's mysterious death. Among other details, he revealed that Wood and Wagner had been arguing before her fall.
